My Surprise Valentine
Arms linking
No need for thinking
about who you are
or what we’re going to do.
I just follow you
winding through voices and vendors.
I watch
as you smile at one,
hold a door for another.
“I like people who care about people,”
you explain.
But soon faces seem to disappear
It feels like it's only you and me here.
When did my hand slip inside yours?
Oh, I like the way you squeeze it a little more.
Senses heightened
but not at all frightened.
Instead, I surrender to whatever we find.
It’s funny how something new
can feel so right.
Busy stalls at Pike Place Market,
artist walks and hanging baskets.
Each scent lures me deeper.
Coffee beans and cinnamon sticks,
Bread and pastries, fruit and fish.
Children screaming,
and my heart beating.
Everything is alive now
with you by my side.
You- all dimples and lips,
as I giggle and sip
a cup of Seattle's Best.
Are you sure we didn’t meet before?
‘cos this conversation sings and flows.
Even the silences are calming.
Musical rests
allow me to feel your rhythm and breath
reverberating in my body…
Your honesty…
The daring of trust,
The freshness of a new beginning
Hearts open,
Fears and dreams spilled and spoken,
over mashed potatoes
and chicken pot pie.
Southern comforts shared with a southern guy.
I love the way you want to sit
on the same side of the booth as me.
The closer you get, the more I'm intrigued.
Warm, welcoming, worry free.
We're just two strangers
Giving into destiny.
When darkness comes,
I don’t want to let go.
“Stay if you like,” you say.
I like, I love, I smile above,
grateful for whatever brought you my way.
brought you to me, on this Valentine’s Day. ©
