Gotta Sing My Own Song 2

Grandma was denied an education
School was not for girls
They said Men would run the nation.
She went about her days
taking care of all the others.
Didn't have the liberties
of her husband and her brothers.

Want to sing my own song
for the discrimination that went on
She was silenced and wronged
Don't know how she held so strong.

Father worked to feed his children
A man full of energy and wisdom.
But had to leave his country of birth
They took his home, his work, his worth.
It was a question of skin colour
Prejudice claimed he was "the other".
But he HAD a right to that land
He was flesh and blood, a fellow man!

Gotta sing my own song
To break the injustice that went on.
He was silenced and wronged
Made to feel he didn't belong.

"Let Freedom Reign!"
-those wise words of Mr. King.
Let freedom sing
And equality begin.

At school they said I didn't fit in
My hair was too thick
and my legs too thin.
Just a little girl, yearning to break free
from the past pain and misery.
Now living in the land of liberty
yet surrounded by hate and jealousy.
Why can't they just let me be?
A heart lies in here,
an IDENTITY.

Gotta sing my own song
Been tongue-tied for too long
They said silence brings calm
But this rage in me is SO strong.
And running...
No, racing.

I feel generations of hearts aching
Can't keep quiet anymore.
This heart's ready to soar.

So I'm singing my song
It's been far too long.
Gonna keep singing my song
to set voices free.
Gonna keep singing my song
to turn around history. © Tasleem
